Mehbooba on the J&K government’s “unique ID” plan: “Kashmiris are viewed with great distrust.”

The Jammu and Kashmir government’s “unique ID” plan is drawing criticism from Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of the state. Mufti says that the plan will only serve to further alienate Kashmiris, who are already viewed with great distrust by the Indian government.

Mufti’s comments come in response to the J&K government’s announcement that it will begin issuing “unique ID cards” to all residents of the state. The ID cards will contain biometric data and other personal information, and will be required for access to government services.

Critics say that the ID cards will be used to track the movements of Kashmiris and to further restrict their rights. Mufti says that the plan is a “terrible idea” that will only increase the mistrust and suspicion that Kashmiris face.
