If you’re a smoker in your 40s or 50s, new research suggests that you may be more likely to experience memory loss and confusion in midlife. The study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Edinburgh, found that smokers were more likely to have lower scores on tests of memory and thinking skills than non-smokers.

While the study couldn’t prove that smoking caused the memory problems, the researchers say that the findings add to the growing body of evidence linking smoking to cognitive decline.

If you’re a smoker, quitting may help improve your memory and thinking skills in midlife. Talk to your doctor about ways to quit smoking that may work for you.
