More than 3,500 Americans died from Long Covid, according to a US health body report.
The CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report said that, as of February 7, there had been 3,538 confirmed deaths and 22,135 cases of long Covid in the US.
The report said that the “vast majority” of those who died were aged 65 or over, and that more than two-thirds were women.
According to the CDC, long Covid is defined as “Covid-19 illness that lasts for more than four weeks after diagnosis”.
Symptoms can include fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, depression, shortness of breath and chest pain.
The CDC’s report comes as the US continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic.
More than 400,000 Americans have died from Covid-19 since the pandemic began, and the US has recorded more than 28 million infections.
The CDC’s report underscores the need for Americans to continue to take precautions against the virus, such as wearing masks and social distancing.
It also highlights the importance of getting vaccinated against Covid-19, as the vaccines currently available are highly effective at preventing serious illness and death.
