Per a person familiar with the situation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to speak to a joint session of Congress on July 24.

Netanyahu received a formal invitation to address Congress this week, marking the latest demonstration of the wartime support for the steadfast ally despite growing political rifts over Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in Gaza. However, the speech’s date had been erratic. According to the insider, who was given anonymity to talk about private preparations, it has now been scheduled for July 24.

The letter inviting Netanyahu was signed by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, House Republican Leader Mike Johnson, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat. According to them, the goal of the offer was to “highlight America’s solidarity with Israel.”

There will undoubtedly be many protests against Netanyahu’s visit before a Congress that is becoming more and more split, both from pro-Palestinian demonstrators outside the Capitol and from MPs within. Additionally, it will highlight the widening rift among Democrats in the run-up to the election over how the prime minister is handling the protracted fight against Hamas.
