On the occasion of his 113th birthday, the nation honours Ram Manohar Lohia.

Ram Manohar Lohia was born on 23 March 1910, in Akbarpur village of Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad district. He was an Indian independence activist and a socialist political leader. After completing his graduation from the University of Calcutta, he became a professor of economics at the same university. He was also actively involved in the Quit India Movement.

Lohia was a firm believer of socialism and is credited with coining the term “anti-Congressism”. He was a critic of the Nehruvian model of socialism and was opposed to the Soviet model of socialism. He advocated for a decentralized form of socialism which would be more suitable for Indian conditions.

Lohia’s ideas were greatly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi and he is also known for his advocacy of Gandhian values. He was a strong supporter of women’s empowerment and advocated for their political and economic rights. He also fought against caste discrimination and advocated for the upliftment of Dalits and other marginalized communities.

Lohia was a prolific writer and his works include “The Myth of the Downtrodden masses”, “Guerrilla Warfare”, and “Ethics in Politics”. He passed away on 12 January 1967.
