On the fringes of the G7 Summit in Italy on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to have meetings with a number of international leaders, including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

On the condition of anonymity, those with knowledge of the situation stated that bilateral meetings, or pull-asides, had been finalised, and a number of international leaders were expected to attend the summit being hosted at the Fasano resort.

Though he has been invited as a special guest to the summit, there has been no news on whether Modi would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy or Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Along with the leaders of a number of other nations, including Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, Modi has been invited to the G7 Summit outreach session. During the talks, he will be speaking about artificial intelligence (AI), energy, Africa, the Mediterranean, and issues that are important to the Global South.

Modi wrote on X shortly after arriving in Italy, expressing his eagerness to have fruitful conversations with foreign leaders. In order to create international collaboration and address global issues, we must work together for a better future.

The next meeting between Modi and Biden is the main focus, according to the individuals mentioned above. Due to time and scheduling constraints, it may be a pull-aside rather than a bilateral meeting. The two presidents will be meeting for the first time since they had dinner conversations outside of the G20 Summit in New Delhi last year.

While Modi and Biden will have a chance to assess the expanding India-US alliance during their discussion, particularly in light of their trip to New Delhi the following week, by US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, the American side has made it clear that it will continue to pursue the alleged plot to assassinate Khalistani leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil “at very senior levels”.

While travelling to Italy, Sullivan answered questions on the matter from the media, stating that “it will be a continuing topic of dialogue between the US and India, including at very senior levels.” The US has made its views on this matter known.

According to Sullivan, Biden called Modi to congratulate him on securing a third term as prime minister and anticipates seeing him outside the G7 Summit.

A high-level inquiry committee has been established in India to examine the US’s input on the alleged “murder for hire” scheme. Senior officials have stated that an investigation is underway because the issue has implications for the nation’s security.

Additionally, bilateral discussions between Modi and the following leaders are scheduled: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and French President Emmanuel Macron. According to the people, Zelenskyy, whom Modi had met during the G7 Summit in Japan last year, is also open to a meeting or pull-aside.

With the severe decline in India-Canada ties, there is minimal chance that Modi and Trudeau will meet. After Trudeau claimed Indian government operatives may have been involved in the June 2017 death of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, ties between the two sides collapsed. India, which deemed Nijjar to be a terrorist, called Trudeau’s charge “absurd.”
