The Prime Minister has paid tribute to the military, recalling the 1971 battle and saying the nation is “forever indebted” to the men and women who serve.

It was 50 years ago today that the Battle of Long Tan took place – one of the most significant battles fought by Australian troops during the Vietnam War.

In a statement, the Prime Minister said the battle “stands as a testament to the courage and sacrifice of our servicemen and women”.

“On this anniversary, we remember the 18 Australians who were killed in action and the many more who were wounded,” the Prime Minister said.

“We also remember the Vietnamese soldiers who fought alongside our troops, as well as the civilians caught in the crossfire.
