As the nation battled to preserve political stability, Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as “Prachanda,” was given a vote of confidence in Parliament on Wednesday.

With 157 votes in the 275-member House of Representatives, Prachanda, 69, a former guerilla leader from the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), the third-largest party in the HoR, was elected to the House.

Parliament votes in favor of Nepali Prime Minister Prachanda.

The Maoist leader formed a new alliance with the Communist Party of Nepal and left the Nepali Congress a few days prior to the ballot.

Since he became prime minister in December 2022, Prachanda has asked the House for a vote of confidence three times in little time.

A prime minister must take a vote of confidence in accordance with constitutional procedures if an ally withdraws support for the current coalition.
