The Rabi area is a key wheat-growing region in India, and the recent rise in area under wheat cultivation is a good sign for the crop this year. However, a warm winter is a problem for wheat, as it can lead to the crop maturing too early and losing its quality. Farmers in the Rabi region will be keeping a close eye on the weather in the coming months, and hoping for a more normal winter.

Cultivated area under wheat, the main winter staple currently in short supply, jumped 25% as on November 10, official data shows. Acreages of most rabi or winter-sown crops stand higher than last year, farm ministry’s data showed.
