Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party’s vice president, praised former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in a tweet. “Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a great Prime Minister, a wonderful statesman and a true Indian patriot. It was an honour and a privilege to have known him,” Rahul tweeted.

However, this praise for the former Prime Minister, who belongs to the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), didn’t go down well with some Congress leaders. Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam was quick to criticise Rahul for his “heaping praises” on Vajpayee.

“It is true that Vajpayee was a great Prime Minister but what is the need for Rahul Gandhi to heap praises on him now? We must remember that Vajpayee was also responsible for the 2002 Gujarat riots,” Nirupam tweeted.

This sparked off a Twitter war between the two leaders with Nirupam even calling Rahul a “traitor” for praising Vajpayee.

While some Congress leaders criticised Rahul for his tweet, others came out in support of him. Congress leader Digvijaya Singh tweeted, “Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a gentleman politician”.
