National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Monday accompanied Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on a two-day visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, during which he is scheduled to assess the preparedness of the strategically-located archipelago.

During the visit, the minister will chair the meeting of the combined command of the army, navy and air force. He will also be briefed about the security situation in the Indian Ocean Region.

The minister will also visit the naval base INS Baaz and the air base INS Utkrosh in Port Blair. He will also lay the foundation stone for a Coast Guard air base in Port Blair.

The visit is being seen as an effort by the government to send out a strong message to China, which has been increasing its footprint in the Indian Ocean Region.
