Mumbai: Ahead of election day, May 20, the city is scheduled to witness a tremendous display of strength from the government and opposition parties on May 17. Simultaneous rallies will be held at Shivaji Park and the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), not wanting to be overwhelmed by the ruling alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s election campaign blitzkrieg in Mumbai, has decided to hold a rally at BKC with some of its bigwigs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is supposed to speak at a gathering at Shivaji Park on the same day.

Among the politicians attending the INDIA bloc event are Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Chief of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Uddhav Thackeray, Founder of the Nationalist Congress Party, Sharad Pawar, and Convener of the Aam Aadmi Party, Arvind Kejriwal. On May 18, the leaders of the opposition coalition will also speak at a joint news conference in Mumbai, according to Maharashtra Congress in-charge Ramesh Chennithala.

On May 17, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation denied Shiv Sena (UBT) permission to organise the protest in Shivaji Park. As a result, the decision was made to hold the event at BKC. Despite the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, not fielding a single candidate for the 2024 elections, the local authority instead granted permission for the party to host a demonstration in the public park on that day. The Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, has the backing and will be actively promoted by the MNS.

At this gathering, which PM Modi will speak, the Mahayuti coalition is seeking to capitalise on Raj Thackeray’s affiliation with Shivaji Park, which has a significant connection to his uncle, the late Bal Thackeray, the founder of the Shiv Sena.

“Sharad Pawar will be welcomed by Congress”

Chennithala, in the meantime, declared that should senior leader Sharad Pawar want to combine his NCP section with the historic party, the Congress would be happy to have them. This came after Pawar recently stated in an interview with The Indian Express that in the upcoming years, a number of regional parties will collaborate more closely with the Congress, and some of them may even combine with it.

Veteran national politician Sharad Pawar was formerly a member of the Congress party. He adheres to the ideologies of Jawaharlal Nehru and Gandhiji. The coming together of like-minded individuals would not present any problems. Congress will welcome Sharad Pawad if he makes any decisions after the polls, Chennithala stated.

The leader of the Maharashtra Congress also denounced Modi for his recent, sensitive comments on the community, in which the prime minister called Muslims “infiltrators” and “those who have more children.” If the Congress won power, Modi had promised to give Muslims a share of the country’s riches.

“It is inappropriate for the PM to use such language,” Chennithala stated. “However, PM Modi is speaking on Hindu-Muslim relations, India-Pakistan relations, and other topics without having anything to say about his past ten years in office.”

Chennithala also posed the issue of who would succeed Modi as prime minister once he becomes 75. “BJP leaders must retire at the age of 75, per a provision that PM Modi established. Veteran BJP politicians like Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi were compelled to step down by Modi. Now, in September, Prime Minister Modi will turn 75 years old. Will Amit Shah succeed him as Prime Minister after his retirement from public office? This would require a response from the BJP and PM Modi, Chennithala stated.

He further criticised Prime Minister Modi for inciting hate between Muslims and Hindus by using language that is sectarian in nature. “The PM should not use such terminology in their role. However, since PM Modi has nothing to say about his past ten years of leadership, he is speaking about Hindus and Muslims, India and Pakistan, and other topics, Chennithala remarked.
