Italian media claimed on Monday that Pope Francis underlined in a closed-door meeting with Italian bishops that gay individuals should not be permitted to become priests, using a highly disparaging phrase towards the LGBT population.

The pope was described by Italy’s biggest circulation dailies, La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera, as stating that seminaries, or priesthood institutions, are already overrun with “frociaggine,” a colloquial phrase that loosely translates to “faggotness.”

When contacted for comment, the Vatican remained silent.

While Corriere reported the allegation was supported by a few unidentified bishops who suggested the pope, being an Argentine, might not have recognised that the Italian phrase he used was insulting, La Repubblica ascribed their tale to multiple unidentified sources.

website that spreads political rumours The Italian Bishops Conference reportedly launched a four-day conference on May 20 with a private meeting with the pope. Dagospia was the first to report on the purported incident.

Thus far, the 87-year-old Francis has been recognised for having inspired the Roman Catholic Church to adopt a more accepting stance towards the LGBT population.

He famously remarked, “If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge?” at the beginning of his pontificate in 2013. However, the previous year, he permitted priests to bless members of same-sex marriages, which greatly infuriated conservatives.

However, when he met with Italian bishops in 2018, he gave a similar speech about gay seminarians, omitting the alleged profanity and advising them to thoroughly screen candidates for the priesthood and turn away anyone who seems to be gay.

The Vatican stated in a 2005 declaration issued by Francis’s late predecessor, Benedict XVI, that individuals who had resolutely overcome their homosexual impulses for a minimum of three years might be admitted into the priesthood.

Practiced homosexuals, people with “deep-seated” homosexual impulses, and anyone who “support the so-called gay culture” should not be allowed entry, according to the text.
