The hajj will begin on June 14, according to Saudi Arabia, after astronomical observatories saw the crescent moon on Thursday night, indicating the start of the month-long pilgrimage.

According to the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the Supreme Court declared that Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th and last month in the Islamic calendar, will start on Friday.

One of the five pillars of Islam is the hajj, which every Muslim who has the means to do so must perform at least once.

It entails a sequence of rites performed at Mecca and the adjacent areas in western Saudi Arabia over a minimum of four days.

The peak of the event is on the second day, when pilgrims assemble to worship atop Mount Arafat, the site of the Prophet Mohammed’s last sermon.

This year, on June 15, that will take place, and on June 16, which is the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, SPA stated.

The minister of the hajj and umrah in Saudi Arabia, Tawfiq al-Rabiah, stated during a press conference on Thursday that “approximately 1.2 million pilgrims from various countries of the world” have already arrived in Saudi Arabia for the hajj this year.
