Sela tunnel to be dedicated to the nation by PM Modi on March 9
The Sela project comprises two tunnels: Tunnel 1, a 1,003-meter long tunnel, and Tunnel 2, a 1,595-meter twin tube tunnel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to dedicate the Sela tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh to the country on Saturday, enabling faster deployment of weapons, soldiers, and equipment to forward areas near the Line of Actual Control in the Tawang sector.
Modi will inaugurate the world’s longest twin-lane tunnel, built by the Border Roads Organisation, remotely from Itanagar, costing Rs.825 crore.
The Sela tunnel project aims to improve winter connectivity to Tawang, a 14,000-foot pass that has been a logistics challenge for the army for decades. The tunnel will reduce travel time by at least one hour and offer all-weather connectivity.
Officials announced that the Sela tunnel, designed for a daily traffic density of 3,000 cars and 2,000 trucks, will enhance the country’s defence preparedness and contribute to the region’s socio-economic development.
The Sela project comprises two tunnels, Tunnel 1, a 1,003-meter long tunnel, and Tunnel 2, a 1,595-meter twin tube tunnel, which pass through two ridges west of Sela. The project also includes two 8.6 km roads, one bi-lane tube for traffic and one escape tube for emergencies.
BRO has completed 330 infrastructure projects worth Rs.8,737 crore in the past three years, enhancing strategic mobility of Indian armed forces along the contested border with China.
