Seven people are killed as Peru’s new president fails to stop protests.

It’s been a little over a week since Martin Vizcarra was sworn in as Peru’s new president, and already he’s facing a major crisis. Seven people have been killed in protests that have erupted across the country, as Vizcarra has failed to stop them.

The protests were initially sparked by a proposed education reform bill, which would have among other things, ended teacher tenure. But they quickly escalated into a general expression of discontent with the government, with many Peruvians feeling that their voices are not being heard.

Vizcarra has responded by declaring a state of emergency and suspending civil liberties, including the right to peaceful assembly. This has only served to further inflame the situation, and it appears that Peru is heading for a long period of political instability.
