Siddique Kappan, a journalist from Kerala, will be released from prison after two years. Kappan was arrested in October 2020 while on his way to Hathras to report on the alleged gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman. He was accused of having links to the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), and was charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Kappan’s arrest sparked protests from journalists and civil rights activists, who demanded his release. The Kerala High Court had ordered Kappan’s release on bail in March 2021, but the Supreme Court stayed the order.
