Sonia Gandhi, the president of India’s ruling Congress party, has called for a protest at the prime minister’s house to press for a resolution to the border impasse with China.

The move comes after weeks of rising tensions between the two countries, which have been locked in a stand-off over a disputed territory in the Himalayas.

Ms Gandhi’s intervention is likely to add to the pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been criticised for his handling of the crisis.

India and China have been involved in a number of territorial disputes over the years, but the current stand-off is the longest and most serious in recent memory.

It began in April, when Chinese troops began building a road in an area claimed by both China and India.

Indian troops responded by setting up their own camp in the area, and the two sides have been locked in a stand-off ever since.

The stand-off has led to a sharp deterioration in relations between the two countries, with both sides accusing the other of provocative behaviour.

There have also been a number of clashes between Indian and Chinese soldiers, with both sides reporting injuries.
