Sukesh Chandrashekhar, the main accused in the Delhi gangrape case, attempted to deceive the trial judge as well, the Delhi Police told the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

Chandrashekhar, who is currently on death row, had filed a petition in the apex court seeking a review of its judgment upholding his conviction and death sentence.

However, the Delhi Police told a bench of Justices Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy that Chandrashekhar had “attempted to deceive” the trial judge by filing a false medical certificate in the court.

“He (Chandrashekhar) had submitted a false medical certificate in the trial court stating that he was not in a position to understand the proceedings,” the Delhi Police said.

The police also said that Chandrashekhar had “misled” the trial court by claiming that he was not mentally fit to understand the proceedings.

“He is a habitual offender and has been convicted in three other cases. He is a menace to the society and deserves no leniency,” the Delhi Police said.

The bench, after hearing the submissions, reserved its order on Chandrashekhar’s petition.
