Supreme Court to hear plea challenging impending eviction in Haldwani protest site.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a plea challenging the impending eviction of protesters in Haldwani, Uttarakhand. The petitioners allege that the eviction is illegal and violates their right to protest. They also allege that the police have been using force to disperse the protesters. The petitioners have requested the court to issue an interim order preventing the eviction.
The Haldwani protest has become the latest flashpoint between the BJP and the opposition. Several opposition leaders have extended their support to the protesters. On Wednesday, Uttarakhand’s former chief minister Harish Rawat held a one-hour silent protest against the planned demolition.
The Uttarakhand high court ordered the removal of the “encroachment” from the railway land in Haldwani on December 20, 2022. The decision was made in a PIL that was first submitted in 2013.
- While the demonstrations were ongoing, the railway authorities conducted a survey of “illegal” buildings in accordance with the court’s decision.
- Due to the long-standing structures on the land, 50,000 inhabitants will be impacted. The homes are connected to both water and power.
- The demonstrators contend that the land is not theirs, a claim that was backed up by opposition leaders. Asaduddin Owaisi, the president of AIMIM, questioned how all of these are illegal encroachments given that there are government schools.
