The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has summoned RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav to appear before it today in connection with the land-for-jobs scandal. This is the first time that Tejashwi, the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, has been called for questioning by the CBI since the FIR was lodged against him in July 2017.

Tejashwi Yadav, the deputy chief minister of Bihar, missed three CBI summonses issued against him earlier this month and asked the court to reject the summon on the grounds that the Bihar Assembly session was still in session as of April 5.

The land-for-jobs scandal relates to the alleged irregularities in the award of contracts for the development of two Bihar government buildings – the New Secretariat and the New Bihar Vidhan Sabha – to a private company. The CBI has alleged that the company was favoured in the award of the contract in return for a job for Tejashwi’s brother, Tej Pratap Yadav.

Tejashwi has denied any wrongdoing, and has accused the CBI of political vendetta. His appearance before the CBI today is likely to be keenly watched, given the high-stakes nature of the case.
