The appointment of Dr. K. Riji John as Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (Kufos) was revoked by the Kerala High Court on Monday due to a rule violation by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The selection committee’s composition and recommendations were declared unlawful by a division bench composed of Chief Justice S Mani Kumar and Justice Shaji P Chaly.

The HC made it crystal clear that the appointment of the V-C must adhere to UGC rules and regulations by giving the Chancellor instructions to set up a new committee.
The court’s decision is a setback for the state, which has been at odds with Governor Arif Mohammad Khan over the choice of vice chancellors at the state’s various universities.

It’s interesting to note that Riji John was one of 11 vice chancellors who received show-cause notices from the governor after the Supreme Court invalidated M S Rajashree’s appointment as the vice chancellor of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University last month.

The decision came after two senior teachers who were considered for the position, K K Vijayan and Sadasivan, petitioned the UGC, questioning K Riji John’s appointment and citing a breach of the UGC’s standards.
