The centre has approved free rations for the needy under the Food Security Act until December 23. This will provide some relief to those who are struggling to make ends meet.

About 813 million poor in India will be provided with free ration for a year, the government has announced.

The government has scrapped a temporary relief measure that provided 5kg per person per month additional free dry ration from April 2020 to December 31 this year. The move will raise the Centre’s annual food subsidy bill by ₹2 lakh crore, minister Piyush Goyal said.

PM Narendra Modi’s “sensitive personality” led to free food grains for the poor immediately after the Covid-19 pandemic, he said.

PM Narendra Modi will meet Macron, Kishida, and Biden during the G7 Summit.

Published

on

On the fringes of the G7 Summit in Italy on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to have meetings with a number of international leaders, including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

On the condition of anonymity, those with knowledge of the situation stated that bilateral meetings, or pull-asides, had been finalised, and a number of international leaders were expected to attend the summit being hosted at the Fasano resort.

Though he has been invited as a special guest to the summit, there has been no news on whether Modi would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy or Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Along with the leaders of a number of other nations, including Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, Modi has been invited to the G7 Summit outreach session. During the talks, he will be speaking about artificial intelligence (AI), energy, Africa, the Mediterranean, and issues that are important to the Global South.

Modi wrote on X shortly after arriving in Italy, expressing his eagerness to have fruitful conversations with foreign leaders. In order to create international collaboration and address global issues, we must work together for a better future.

The next meeting between Modi and Biden is the main focus, according to the individuals mentioned above. Due to time and scheduling constraints, it may be a pull-aside rather than a bilateral meeting. The two presidents will be meeting for the first time since they had dinner conversations outside of the G20 Summit in New Delhi last year.

While Modi and Biden will have a chance to assess the expanding India-US alliance during their discussion, particularly in light of their trip to New Delhi the following week, by US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, the American side has made it clear that it will continue to pursue the alleged plot to assassinate Khalistani leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil “at very senior levels”.

While travelling to Italy, Sullivan answered questions on the matter from the media, stating that “it will be a continuing topic of dialogue between the US and India, including at very senior levels.” The US has made its views on this matter known.

According to Sullivan, Biden called Modi to congratulate him on securing a third term as prime minister and anticipates seeing him outside the G7 Summit.

A high-level inquiry committee has been established in India to examine the US’s input on the alleged “murder for hire” scheme. Senior officials have stated that an investigation is underway because the issue has implications for the nation’s security.

Additionally, bilateral discussions between Modi and the following leaders are scheduled: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and French President Emmanuel Macron. According to the people, Zelenskyy, whom Modi had met during the G7 Summit in Japan last year, is also open to a meeting or pull-aside.

With the severe decline in India-Canada ties, there is minimal chance that Modi and Trudeau will meet. After Trudeau claimed Indian government operatives may have been involved in the June 2017 death of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, ties between the two sides collapsed. India, which deemed Nijjar to be a terrorist, called Trudeau’s charge “absurd.”

Even as the number of Indians who lost their lives increased after one of the injured in the hospital passed away, an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft was returning the bodies of forty-five Indian nationals who perished in a horrific fire in Kuwait.

Early on Friday morning, the C-130J Hercules aircraft took off from Kuwait. It is anticipated that it would land in Kochi, Kerala, at approximately 11 a.m., and then continue on to New Delhi. Before the plane continues its flight to the nation’s capital, the bodies of the twenty-three Keralan victims will be given to Kochi authorities.

Kirti Vardhan Singh, the state minister for external affairs, is flying back aboard the Indian Air Force aircraft. She was dispatched to Kuwait to supervise relief efforts and enable the prompt return of remains.

According to Kuwait’s foreign minister Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, one of the injured passed away over night, bringing the death toll to 50. According to people with knowledge of the situation, the injured victim passed away, bringing the total number of Indian fatalities to 46. Three Filipinos were also murdered in the fire, while one person’s body is yet unidentified.

196 foreign workers were lodged in a building in Mangaf, southern Kuwait, when the fire started early on Wednesday. Of them, 33 were receiving treatment in other hospitals, and 176 were citizens of India. the Indian embassy in Kuwait said in a statement.

The remaining individuals were from the following states: Bihar, Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and seven more from each of these states.

Notices on NTA’s appeal to move NEET-UG row cases from HCs to the SC are issued.

Published

on

New Delhi: In response to the National Testing Agency’s petition to transfer cases on the NEET-UG issue that are proceeding in many high courts to the highest court in order to prevent a proliferation of litigation, the Supreme Court on Friday sent letters to private parties.

The National Testing Agency’s submission that multiple pleas, seeking cancellation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test–Under Graduate, 2024 on the grounds of question paper leaks and other malpractices, are pending in several high courts was noted by a vacation bench consisting of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta.

“Issue notice,” the bench declared, adding that a hearing would be held on July 8.

Meanwhile, the NTA announced its intention to withdraw three other petitions that sought to transfer cases from higher courts to the supreme court. These petitions concerned the awarding of grace marks to 1,563 candidates who were late for the May 5 exam.

The NTA’s attorney declared that the matter had been resolved and that he would notify the supreme court of the decision to revoke the compensatory marks awarded to 1,536 candidates as well as the ensuing June 13 ruling.

The Centre and the NTA informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that they had revoked the grace marks granted to 1,563 applicants who took the exam in order to be admitted to MBBS and other similar programmes, amidst a furious dispute over the NEET-UG exam.

The centre had stated that they will be given the choice to retake the test or forfeit the bonus points that were given to them for time lost.

About 24 lakh students sat the exam, which was administered on May 5 at 4,750 locations. Although the results were supposed to be released on June 14, they were instead revealed on June 4, perhaps as a result of the answer sheet examination being finished sooner.

Protests in multiple locations and cases filed in seven high courts, including the Supreme Court, have resulted from the charges. On June 10, a large number of students demonstrated in Delhi to demand an investigation into purported anomalies.

Six students from a centre in Faridabad, Haryana, made the list of pupils who achieved a perfect 720, which is unique in the history of the NTA and raised questions about anomalies. Grace marks are said to have played a part in 67 students sharing the top spot.

For admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other relevant courses in public and private universities across the nation, the NTA administers the NEET-UG exam.
