New Zealand Cricket has announced that Tim Southee is the new captain of the Black Caps, after Kane Williamson resigned from the role. Southee, who has played 64 Tests for New Zealand, takes over the captaincy with immediate effect.

Williamson stepped down as Test captain after New Zealand’s 2-0 series defeat to Pakistan. In a statement, Williamson said that he felt it was the right time for him to step down and that he was proud of what he had achieved as captain.

“It has been an absolute privilege to lead this team, and I am extremely proud of what we have achieved together,” Williamson said.

“However, I feel now is the right time for me to step down as captain and allow someone else to take the team forward.”

Southee, who has been vice-captain under Williamson, said he was honoured to be given the captaincy.
