When the hamlet needed to build a bridge, the villagers looked to one of their own, an Odisha driver, to help. He pawned his wife’s jewellery to raise the money needed for construction. The bridge has now been built, and the driver’s wife has her jewellery back. The villagers are thankful for their new bridge and for the driver’s sacrifice.

For the last two elections, Ranjit Nayak heard about building a permanent bridge over a nearby river. The bridge would give the villagers easy access to a government hospital in neighbouring Kalahandi. Like most villagers, he hoped politicians would keep their promise to build a bridge.
