To resolve the Cambridge Analytica lawsuit, Meta will pay $725 million.
The social media company Meta has agreed to pay $725 million to resolve a lawsuit over the misuse of data from 87 million Facebook users by the political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica. The settlement, which was announced on Wednesday, also includes a provision for Meta to establish a new independent privacy committee and appoint an independent privacy officer.
The lawsuit, which was filed by the attorney general of Washington, D.C., in March 2018, accused Meta of failing to protect the personal information of its users and of deceiving them about how their data would be used. Under the terms of the settlement, Meta will pay $650 million to a fund that will be used to provide restitution to the users whose data was mishandled, as well as to support privacy initiatives and research. The company will also pay $75 million to the attorney general’s office to cover the costs of the investigation and litigation.
Meta’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, said in a statement that the company was “pleased to have reached a settlement” and that it was “committed to building the best possible products” to protect people’s information.
