The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a “very heavy rainfall” warning in numerous regions of the nation on Tuesday, signaling the arrival of the Southwest monsoon.

The weather service predicts that “very heavy” rainfall will persist across portions of Maharashtra and Karnataka for the next 24 hours, after which there will be a gradual abatement.

We have been experiencing significant to very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over the last two to three days, mostly over Maharashtra and parts of coastal Karnataka, which is related to this early monsoon commencement. Senior IMD scientist Dr. Soma Sen Roy was reported by ANI as saying, “We are expecting very heavy rainfall that is likely to continue over this region, that is, south and Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, South Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, as well as Coastal Karnataka.”

Roy went on to say that there’s a good chance of really heavy rainfall in some areas of north interior Karnataka.

Heavy rain fell over Mumbai earlier on Monday night. No significant water-logging incidents were reported in the city, though. PTI said that meteorological officials said the city received 50 millimeters of rain over the course of a day that ended early on Tuesday.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are expected to experience “fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall” over the next seven days, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, according to the IMD’s bulletin.

“There is a high probability of isolated heavy rainfall over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh from June 10 to June 14; on June 10, 13, and 14 in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.Arunachal Pradesh is expected to have isolated, extremely heavy rainfall on June 13 and 14, while Assam, Meghalaya, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are also expected to experience it from June 11 to 14.

It also stated that from July 12 to 14, there is a high probability of isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha, as well as for the next five days in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. These conditions will likely be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

On June 11, squally winds and isolated hailstorms are quite likely to pass over south Madhya Pradesh, according to the IMD.
