Donetsk, Ukraine – Two senior pro-Russian figures were reportedly injured in a Ukrainian mortar attack in Donetsk on Tuesday.

The attack occurred near the city’s airport, which has been the scene of heavy fighting in recent days.

The injured men were identified as Alexander Zakharchenko, the leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, and Vladimir Antyufeev, the republic’s “deputy prime minister”.

Both men were taken to a hospital in Donetsk for treatment. There was no immediate word on their condition.

The Donetsk People’s Republic is a breakaway state in eastern Ukraine that is supported by Russia. The Ukrainian government has been fighting against the republic’s forces since 2014.
