UK: A 13-year-old is treated for leukaemia in a “world-first” procedure.
A 13-year-old boy in the UK has become the first person in the world to be treated for leukaemia using a new type of cell therapy.
The new treatment, which is still in the early stages of development, involves taking healthy blood cells from a donor and genetically modifying them to attack the cancer cells.
The modified cells are then injected into the patient, where they start to multiply and destroy the cancer cells.
So far, the treatment has been shown to be safe and effective in animal studies, and the first human patient is now responding well to the treatment.
This is an exciting development in the fight against leukaemia, and doctors hope that it could eventually lead to a cure for the disease.
