Ukraine and Russia must return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue: India at UN Security Council meeting
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Ukraine, with India’s permanent representative to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin, stressing the need for a diplomatic and dialogue-based approach to resolving the crisis.
Akbaruddin said that India was “deeply concerned” about the situation in Ukraine, and called on all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from any actions that could further escalate the situation.
He also urged Russia and Ukraine to “return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue”, and said that India was ready to contribute to any efforts to de-escalate the situation.
The UNSC meeting comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, after Russian forces seized three Ukrainian navy ships and their crews on Sunday. Ukraine has since declared martial law in parts of the country, and has accused Russia of “aggression”.
Russia, for its part, has accused Ukraine of provoking the incident, and has said that it is ready to defend itself if necessary.
The situation in Ukraine is a complex one, and it is clear that there is no easy solution. However, it is also clear that a diplomatic and dialogue-based approach is the only way to resolve the crisis.
