The United Nations has condemned the banning of journalist accounts on Twitter as “very disturbed.” The world body said that the social media platform should not be used to silence journalists.

Twitter has been under fire for banning several high-profile accounts, including those of journalists, in recent weeks. The company has said that the bans are in line with its policies, but many users have accused Twitter of censorship.

The UN’s statement came after a group of rights organizations urged the world body to speak out against the bans. “We are very disturbed by the recent spate of bans of journalist accounts on Twitter,” the UN said in a statement.

The UN called on Twitter to “respect freedom of expression” and said that the platform should not be used to “silence journalists.”

Twitter has not responded to the UN’s statement.
