Speaking on the alleged assault of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman claimed that the former head of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) was under “pressure from high-level” and that’s why she didn’t register a report for three to four days.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters, Sitharaman stated, “It indicates that there was pressure on Swati Maliwal from higher up because she didn’t file a police report for three to four days after the occurrence. There’s good reason to think that she was under enough pressure and that it will likely continue with her.

Sitharaman criticised Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, for being silent in the face of the attack.

“Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal’s female constituents are questioning whether he can even offer them security in the city. Nirmala Sitharaman stated, “This tragedy is Arvind Kejriwal’s fault.

She expressed disbelief and unacceptableness at Arvind Kejriwal’s silence on the matter.

“CM Arvind Kejriwal has not said a word about the violence against a female member of his own party in the Rajya Sabha since May 13. She stated, “It is unbelievable and unacceptable that he did not even say anything about the assault of the chief of the Delhi Commission for Women, a female member of his party.”

In addition to “kicking” her in her “chest, stomach, and pelvis area,” Maliwal has claimed that Bibhav Kumar, Kejriwal’s personal assistant, “slapped” her “at least seven to eight times” as she “continued screaming” and “brutally dragged” her. In accordance with Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Maliwal also recorded her statement in front of the magistrate in the Tis Hazari court in the nation’s capital on Friday.

Sitharaman also criticised the AAP for not endorsing the Women’s Reservation Bill, which was just enacted by the legislature.

“AAP leader Sanjay Singh referred to the first bill—the Women’s Reservation Bill—as the Mahila Bewakuf Banao Bill when it was passed in the new Parliament building. Who is fooling women these days? No, it’s not the BJP. Bansuri Swaraj and Kamaljeet Sehrawat are the two Delhi-based Lok Sabha candidates for our party. In contrast, she claimed, the AAP does not have a single female candidate in Delhi.

Assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to disrobe, 354B Assault or use of criminal force against a woman, 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult a woman’s modesty) are among the IPC Sections under which Maliwal filed a FIR on Thursday.

Maliwal posted on Thursday, stating, “What happened to me was very bad,” after speaking with X. I have provided the police with my statement regarding the incident that occurred to me. I’m hoping the right steps will be done. I have had an extremely terrible few days. I’m grateful to everyone who prayed for me. The people who attempted to discredit her said that she was acting at the other party’s request; may God continue to bless them as well. The nation is currently holding a crucial election; national issues are more significant than Swati Maliwal. The BJP has received a special appeal not to politicise this tragedy.
