Unmasked DMK’s double standard’: PM Modi’s latest assault on ‘new details’ about the Katchatheevu controversy

PM Modi has used a media report on Katchatheevu, based on an RTI response, to target Congress and DMK.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Congress party over the Katchatheevu issue, stating that new details have exposed the DMK’s double standard, as the BJP intensifies its campaign in Tamil Nadu for the Lok Sabha elections.

In 1974, India’s Prime Minister Indira Gandhi signed an agreement with Sri Lanka, relinquishing India’s claim to the island, a controversial move in Tamil Nadu due to its traditional Indian fishermen use. DMK MP Era Sezhiyan opposed the move, arguing it was a surrender without proper consultation.

A report by The Times of India suggests that Tamil Nadu’s then-chief minister, M. Karunanidhi, generally accepted the agreement in a meeting with Indian officials before the Centre’s announcement. The report is based on an RTI reply received by Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai regarding the 1974 agreement between India and Sri Lanka.

The report indicates that Karunanidhi was informed about the agreement and expressed his willingness to accept it.

Modi stated in a post on X that the Democratic National Congress (DMK) has not done anything to protect Tamil Nadu’s interests.

The prime minister emphasized that Congress and DMK are family units, focusing on their own sons and daughters’ growth, and their disregard for Katchatheevu has negatively impacted the interests of poor fishermen and fisherwomen.

Katchatheevu, home to the St. Anthony’s shrine, is the only structure on the island. Indian fishermen can attend the festival and rest there, but continue to face arrest by Sri Lankan authorities.

The prime minister has reportedly targeted Congress on Sunday regarding the matter.

The Congress has been working for 75 years and counting to undermine India’s unity, integrity, and interests.

Prime Minister Modi has repeatedly raised the issue of Katchatheevu, stating that the Tamil Nadu government continues to send him requests to “take back Katchatheevu”.

The BJP is optimistic about gaining political traction in the Dravidian territory during the Lok Sabha polls, particularly in relation to Sri Lanka’s treatment of Tamilian citizens and Tamil Nadu fishermen, a long-standing political issue in the state.
