After taking high doses of vitamin B6 for a month, trial participants reported feeling less anxious or depressed. The trial offers proof that B6 may be useful in preventing or treating mood disorders due to the calming effect it has on the brain.

When high doses of vitamin B6 were administered to young adults for a month, researchers at the University of Reading found that they reported feeling less anxious and depressed.

The study, which was published in the journal Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental, offers important proof in favour of the use of dietary supplements for treating or preventing mood disorders that are thought to alter brain activity levels. Vitamin B6 helps the body produce a specific chemical messenger that inhibits impulses in the brain, and our study links this calming effect with reduced anxiety among the participants. Raised levels of GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) were confirmed by visual tests carried out at the end of the trial. Nutrition-based interventions produce fewer unpleasant side effects than drugs, and so people might prefer them as an intervention, Dr Field says. One potential option would be to combine Vitamin B6 supplements with talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to boost their effect.
