“Pathaan” controversy refers to the recent incident where Nusrat Jahan, a Bengali actress and newly elected Member of Parliament from West Bengal, was criticised for wearing a traditional red saree and Bindi (vermilion dot) during her oath-taking ceremony in the Lok Sabha.

Jahan, who belongs to the Muslim community, was criticised by some members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for not dressing “like a proper Muslim woman”.

In an interview with a Bengali news channel, Jahan hit back at her critics and said that she represents an inclusive India and that she will continue to dress the way she wants.

Jahan’s comments have sparked a debate on social media, with many people supporting her right to dress as she pleases and others criticising her for “shaming” Islam.

What to dress, what to eat? It’s a question that Nusrat Jahan has been asking herself a lot lately, ever since she was elected to the Lok Sabha from West Bengal.
