Where in the United States can you see the northern lights this weekend?
This weekend, a big and violent geomagnetic storm is expected to hit Earth; in fact, people may even see signs of the northern lights, or aurora borealis, in Alabama and Northern California, which are located far south of Alaska, according to authorities. Some distant residents may be able to see the aurora borealis as it travels across the map over their heads if the sunshine activity is just perfect.
While the storm has alerted power grids, phone networks, and satellite forecasters to potential difficulties, it also creates an amazing nighttime light display in the sky.
US sky will be illuminated by a geomagnetic storm
“If you happen to be in an area where it’s dark and cloud-free and relatively unpolluted by light, you may get to see a fairly impressive aurora display, and that’s really the gift from space weather,” noted Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Centre.
The centre has issued a graphic showing the potential visibility of the aurora on Friday night over a large portion of the northern US. The forecasted aurora is shown by a red line.
The St. Louis office of the National Weather Service recommended locals to go for dark, rural areas away from city lights in order to have the best chance of seeing the northern lights display.
The office advised on social media to “get away from city lights into a dark, rural surrounding and look north.”
The spectacle may be witnessed from as far away as 620 miles away, however the forecast centre points out that onlookers do not need to be right below the aurora to see it.
In the San Francisco Bay Area, however, there was less hope for seeing the aurora because the local weather service office was unsure of the likelihood of a midnight display.
“Probably not, but I’ll look up while walking my dog,” he remarked.
There will be a geomagnetic storm all weekend.
It is anticipated that the storm would last over the weekend, providing several chances to see the northern lights. A forecast map showing opportunities to see the aurora through Saturday night was produced by the prediction centre.
Officials advise using cellphones, which are better suited to catch light, to take pictures of the aurora for those in the southern US who might not be able to view it with their bare eyes.
“Our eyes cannot capture light as well as cellphones can,” said Brent Gordon of the Space Weather Prediction Centre.
“You’d be surprised at what you see in that picture versus what you see with your eyes—just go out your back door and take a picture with a newer mobile.”
