Currently, both public and private sector banks operate on the first and third Saturdays of the month.

The Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and bank unions have proposed a five-day working week for banks before the model code of conduct (MCC) is implemented. The unions urged the implementation of this change within 180 days, similar to government offices, RBI offices, and Life Insurance Corporation of India. The proposal was approved in November and sent to the finance ministry for consideration.

The government has supported the proposal for a five-day week, but is now waiting for an opportune time for the announcement.

Public and private sector banks currently work on the first and third Saturdays of the month, but if approved, all Saturdays will be declared holidays under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

In 2015, the government declared the second and fourth Saturday of every month as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881, allowing all scheduled and non-scheduled banks to observe these holidays.

The banking sector currently employs 1.54 million people, including payment and small finance banks, with 95,000 employees in Regional Rural Banks.
