14,288 New Daily Covid Cases are Recorded in China Days After Relaxed Curbs

On Saturday, 14,288 new local Covid cases were reported in China, and the rate of infection is accelerating even as the country’s top health officials start to improve guidelines for controlling the virus.
According to the National Health Commission, 1,675 new local symptomatic cases and 13,086 asymptomatic cases were discovered on Saturday, with 533 of those cases being reclassified. This is more than the 11,323 total recorded nationwide on Friday. Since surpassing that mark for the first time since April last week, the number of daily cases has remained above 10,000.

The provinces or municipalities with the most outbreaks continue to be Guangdong, Henan, Beijing, Chongqing, and Inner Mongolia. After the government’s Covid Zero playbook underwent a significant overhaul, change started to occur quickly on the ground.

According to the new guidelines, cities have reduced mass Covid testing and released people from detention facilities despite an increase in the number of cases nationwide. At a briefing on the policy adjustment on Saturday, officials stated that additional changes would be made in incremental steps.

Following the new rules, it is still unclear to what extent and how much tightening will take place, particularly in cities where the number of cases is consistently high. Party Secretary Chen Min’er reiterated tasks to reduce movement and gatherings and increase testing capabilities to prevent further spread during a meeting on virus controls in Chongqing, which reported 1,817 new cases on Saturday.

Teen and Miss USA resigned from their titles, citing their personal morals and mental health.

The Miss Universe Organisation was shocked this week when Noelia Voigt, the incumbent Miss USA winner, and UmaSofia Srivastava, the reigning Miss Teen USA winner, both resigned from their crowns within days of one another.

With the resignations, the venerable pageant organisation will be without its top two winners for the first time in seventy-two years, casting doubt on its business methods. Calls for greater openness from Miss USA and her parent company, which have both been the subject of criticism and investigation in the past, have been sparked by the resignations.

Voigt became the first Venezuelan American to hold the title after being crowned in September of 2023.

The former Miss Utah and University of Alabama student stated in an Instagram post on Monday that winning the title was a “childhood dream” and that deciding to step down was a “very tough decision.”

The 24-year-old stated, “My goal is that I continue to inspire others to be strong, prioritise your mental health, and advocate for yourself and others by using your voice.”

Voigt captioned the remark, saying, “I realise this may come as a large shock to many.” Never jeopardise your emotional and physical health. She then praised the “unwavering support” of her supporters.

The Miss USA Organisation expressed gratitude to Voigt for her work and wished her “the best in this next chapter” in a statement.

“We acknowledge and endorse Noelia’s choice to retire from her position. We recognise that she has to put herself first right now, but the health and safety of our titleholders comes first,” the statement said. “We will soon make an announcement regarding the crowning of the new Miss USA, and we are currently reviewing plans for the transfer of responsibilities to a successor.”

Srivastava, who was also crowned in September of last year, declared her resignation on Wednesday in a post on Instagram.

The former Miss New Jersey Teen USA said, “I find that my personal values no longer fully align with the direction of the organisation.”

The 17-year-old expressed gratitude to her family and supporters, expressed her pleasure in representing her state as a first-generation Mexican American, and mentioned how excited she was to apply to universities and continue working on her multilingual children’s book.

“This was certainly not how I saw my reign coming to a close,” the caption that accompanied the message read, although it also described the event as an honour.
